I

In much the same way as since the beginning of the 1880s Nationalists, i.e. followers of the Parliamentary Party, penetrated into Irish local administration and the Boards of Guardians8 a process of ‘nationalization’ took place on the level of political symbols with the creation of the Home Rule Movement. In Irish as in other European national movements, well-known symbols received a national meaning and new symbols were created. The national history, in particular, became the source for national symbols, especially the period of Henry Grattan and the United Irishmen, of Daniel O’Connell, the Young Irelanders, and the early Fenian movement. From among the comparatively large number of symbolic forms used since about 1875 only the most important ones will be discussed here: the flag of the Party, its anthem, the ‘national festivals’ which the Party espoused, the O’Connell monument in Dublin, and the phenomenon of a national nomenclature for streets. squares, and bridges.
